Teaser Tuesday – ‘Airmail: Women of Letters’

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers!

9780670078660This Teaser Tuesday is another NetGalley read – but this one has a difference. Rather than reading a regular novel, I am instead reading a collection of letters, letters written by some of the best known people in the world, to a variety of recipients on varying topics.
This book is the fifth in a series of similar books, and is the result of a movement begun here in Australia to revive the lost art of letter writing, while raising money for charity in the process. This book is the first international collection of letters in the series, and is the first I’ve read, but it’s safe to say I’ll be off to add the rest of them to my book collection pretty soon.

The following sentences are from a letter written by Kim Boekbinder, to “love”. This particular letter has been my favourite so far – I would even go so far as to say that it’s worth buying the book just for this one letter. I’ve cheated and  included more than two sentences as I thought this particular passage was too beautiful not to share in it’s entirety.

“Where is the word for the love that strikes so suddenly, with excruciating brilliance, lasting only a split second but leaving ripples and sparks that bounce around the edges of your vision and make everything glow?
I need a word for the love love, The One, the one that is the one after the last one. Because when you love like I do you know there’s bound to be a few. But they cannot be numbered sequentially. Each must be the one. Not the two.”

  1. I love that quotation and the idea that, though we may have many loves, they’re all “the one” in the moment. I’m glad you’re enjoying!

    • I seriously read that quote (and that letter) with my heart bouncing around in my chest. It was just so beautiful.
The rest of the letters are amazing too – I’ve got lines highlighted all the way through it.

    • The cover is awesome – that’s the main reason I requested it. I’m trying to be very selective in what I request – I’m actually put quite a lot of thought into it.
This book is amazing though – definitely worth a read. I’m about to go to my local bookshop to get a gift for my sister, but I think I’ll get the book of this while I’m there (if they have it). I was highlighting like mad in the Kindle download. I just love it – one of those books I will actually read again and again.
