Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers!
This week I’m reading Patricia Highsmith’s Tales of Natural and Unnatural Catastrophes. I’ve been on the lookout for more books by Highsmith ever since I read The Talented Mr Ripley a few weeks ago, and I picked up this book of short stories for next to nothing at a second-hand bookstore.
It’s not quite what I was expecting in terms of content, but I’m finding it an interesting read nonetheless and it really has confirmed to me how great Highsmith’s writing is and how aware she is of the society around her. Here are the teaser sentences:
“Naomi Barton Markham glows in the night, and peoples her lonely cubicle with figures from the past, people long dead, more ghostly than herself – her own parents, her ill-treated boyfriends, her neglected but faithful-to-the-last son, her kicked around spouses (two). She curses them, mocks them and laughs at them, attempts with her minimal strength to sneer and turn her face away, as in the old days, as she once did to men who loved her, even to friends who tried to be friends.”
What are you reading this week?
