Teaser Tuesday // Rivers of London

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! This week (I hope) sees the release of the next book in the ‘PC Grant’ series by Ben Aaronovitch. So it seemed like a good time to set out on a reread of the entire series (actually, I should have started this months ago, but the release date of the new book kept getting pushed back, so I procrastinated), starting out with the first book, Rivers of London. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this series, it’s kind of like ‘Harry Potter’ meets ‘The Bill’. It’s magical and dark, and definitely not for the kiddies. So if you’re after a new series to read I can highly recommend this one – you’ll devour it in no time. Here’s just the first sentence (it’s …

Teaser Tuesday // ‘The Pigeon Tunnel’

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! This is my most anticipated book of 2016. I have literally been waiting nearly a whole year for it and I even waited a bit longer for my local bookstore to order in a hardcover for me, because I wanted it to be extra special (nothing says “extra special” like a hardcover). It arrived last week and I actually nearly maybe started crying on page 2 because I was so excited to be finally reading it and what I was reading was just everything I had hoped for. Anyway, I’ll try and save some gushing for my review (which I’ll tell you now is going to be less review than gushiness) and share a couple of sentences from page 2. I know I’m meant to …

Teaser Tuesday // In the Month of the Midnight Sun

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! I thought I’d jump back into Teaser Tuesday this week with the book I received for the first month of my Bookabuy subscription. I was pretty excited to get this book written by Cecilia Ekbäck as she had another book (Wolf Winter) out a couple of years that piqued my interest, but that I’m yet to read. Thus far I have mixed feelings about In the Month of the Midnight Sun. I like the plot; well, most of it anyway. The writing is really bothering me though. I won’t go into detail – I’ll save that for if I do a review – but I have a few problems, namely the different narrative voices (or lack thereof) and the use of loads of short sentences. Anyway, it’s good …

Teaser Tuesday // Cat’s Eye

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! This time last week I started my very first Margaret Atwood book and early on I was pretty disappointed in it. So disappointed, in fact, that I almost invoked my new “30% rule”; the 30% mark in the book being the point at which I give up on it and mark it “Abandoned” on Goodreads. It was tough going and I was close to hating it. But at some point before I hit 30% – I’m not sure when – I became completely engrossed in the book and pretty much didn’t want to put it down. I’m now quite amazed that I was going to give up on it and I’m really glad I didn’t. Here are some sentences: “I see that there will be …

Teaser Tuesday // The Twelve

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! Well I didn’t quite hit my goal for the 24 in 48 readathon that happened this weekend just gone. And by not quite I mean didn’t even come close. But I still had an excellent weekend living in a little bubble of books; with everything going on in the world at the moment it was really nice just to be able to shut everything out for a couple of days. But because I didn’t get to read ‘The Passage’ trilogy in its entirety over the weekend, I’m still working through them. I’m just over a third of the way through my reread of The Twelve, so fingers crossed I’ll be onto the final installment, The City of Mirrors, by the end of the week and …

Teaser Tuesday // The Magicians

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages (basically since everyone started blogging about it), and then I accidentally on purpose started watching the TV adaptation and I reeeaaalllyy like it (Penny is my favourite – mostly because he’s surly). So when my Book Bingo card happened to include a square for a book involving magic, it seemed like a good excuse to make a trip to the library (yes – I was good and didn’t just go buy it). I’m just over halfway through and I really like. And it’s really different from the TV show so there hasn’t been a whole bunch of stuff ruined for me. There’s not enough Penny (at least not the TV embodiment of him) for my liking, …

Teaser Tuesday // The Turn of the Screw

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! Firstly, let’s take some time to appreciate how creepy this cover is. What is it with dolls? Why are they so freaky? Can we not have them on book covers anymore? So many irrelevant questions. On to the book. This is the first book by Henry James I’ve ever read (yes, I’m very late to the party) and I’m really digging it so far. Probably my favourite part has been the prologue – it sets up a really spooky creepy story and builds loads of suspense in only a few pages. Hopefully I haven’t set my expectations too high for the rest of the book. I’m really excited to see what shenanigans the two children (who sound like they have the looks to be in …

Teaser Tuesday // Should You Judge This Book by Its Cover?: 100 Fresh Takes on Familiar Sayings and Quotations

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! As you may or may not have noticed, it’s been f o r e v e r  since I posted something. And by f o r e v e r  I mean two weeks. I’ve been busy in real life and prioritising stuff I don’t like much, but that’s life I guess. I have been reading loads still (always time for that on the train) and I thought I’d share some teaser sentences from one of my current reads. I made a spur of the moment decision to go see the philosopher Julian Baggini at the Sydney Writer’s Festival and I’m really glad I did (even though listening to/talking about philosophy first thing on a Sunday morning is a bit muddling for the brain). I …

Teaser Tuesday // Ice Diaries

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jen at Books and A Beat. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! Things are a bit hectic at the moment and I have zero time for any posts of substance, but I do have five minutes to share with you guys what I’m reading this week! I’ve finally got around to reading those ARCs I’m so behind on, and first cab off the rank is Ice Diaries by Jean McNeil. If you’ve spent any time on this blog, you might know that I love to read about Antarctica. However most of those books are by/about the early explorers of the Antarctic continent in the early 1900s. This one was written much more recently and about a much more recent experience – something I would normally steer clear of. It’s very different to what I’d usually like, but …

Teaser Tuesday // Mr Splitfoot

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share two sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers! So a while ago there were a few bloggers reading this book called Mr Splitfoot and they all raved about it and made me really want to read it. I decided I’d try and get it from my library, but naturally when I went there, the shelf was bare (well, there were other books on the shelf, but not the one I wanted). But then, finally, last week it was there! So I grabbed it and so far I LOVE IT. It’s so weird and creepy and I have no idea what’s going to happen next. Importantly, when I’ve finished reading it, I’ll be able to watch the rest of the video chat/review that Julianne (from Outlandish Lit) and Shaina (from Shaina Reads) did – if you’re interested, you can …
