Thrifty Thursday #4 // Travelling with Alexandre Dumas

Thrifty Thursday is a feature started by Sal over at Motion Sick Lit (an excellent book blog – go check it out here). Thrifty Thursday goes like this: Post or talk about a used book you’ve found. The book must cost less than $5. Weird or strange books are preferred. In my last Thrifty Thursday post I called myself “the thriftiest thrift that ever thrifted” because I got my book for free. But I out-thrifted myself for this post, getting not one, but two used books for free. Both of them are travel books written by the great French writer, Alexandre Dumas, titled Alexandre Dumas’ Adventures in Spain and Alexandre Dumas’ Adventures in Caucasia. I received them for my birthday last month from my sister, who picked them up at a second-hand bookstore in Sydney. I was really excited to get these because as much as I love reading Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo is at the top of my list of favourite books ever), I had no idea that he wrote anything other …

Thrifty Thursday #3 // A Fortunate Life

Thrifty Thursday is a meme run by Sal over at Motion Sick Lit (an excellent book blog – go check it out here). Thrifty Thursday goes like this: 1. Each week’s link-up will be posted on Thursday. 2. Post or talk about a used book you’ve found (preferably in a book store or thrift shop). 3. The book must cost less than $5. 4. Be sure to return for the link-up! Weird or strange books are preferred. So basically, find a second-hand book for cheap and talk about it! I’m the thriftiest thrift that ever thrifted this month.  How so? I got this book for FREEEEEEE. From my mum, and with very good reason, which I’ll go into a bit later. But to the (sort of) official Thrifty Thursday Requirements. To be honest I’m really blurring the Thrifty Thursday lines with this one, but I’m sure I’ll sleep ok anyway. Under $5? Yes! Definitely! Free is equal to $0 and if I’d bought this book from my local bookshop, it would have cost me $17.99. So …

Thrifty Thursday #2 // Tales of Natural and Unnatural Catastrophes

Thrifty Thursday is a meme run by Sal over at Motion Sick Lit (an excellent book blog – go check it out here). Thrifty Thursday goes like this: 1. Each week’s link-up will be posted on Thursday. 2. Post or talk about a used book you’ve found (preferably in a book store or thrift shop). 3. The book must cost less than $5. 4. Be sure to return for the link-up! Weird or strange books are preferred. So basically, find a second-hand book for cheap and talk about it! For this Thrifty Thursday I’m cheating a little bit and using a book I bought ages ago and have actually already read, Patricia Highsmith’s (i.e. my lady crush) Tales of Natural and Unnatural Catastrophes. I won’t talk about the content of the book too much – but if you want to see what I thought of it, you can read all about it here. You can also check out the book on Goodreads here. Does it meet the Thrifty Thursday requirements? Under $5? Yes! I paid the …

Thrifty Thursday #1 // The Sea, The Sea

I’m super excited to share my very first Thrifty Thursday post! Considering my book buying ban this year, I’m likely to spend a little more time in my local second-hand book store (obviously I’ll only be exchanging books, not buying them) (or will I?). On my second to last visit there, I picked up a copy of Iris Murdoch’s The Sea, The Sea. It caught my attention because I thought the cover was kind of cool, and printed on that cover were the words, “Booker Prize …
